Nurgun Timofeev is one of the diamond production and sales organizers on the Yakut territory. Now he is occupied with the further development of this industry as the chairman of the Yakut Diamond Counsel of the Yakut President Administration. He gave the interview to the local mass media.
He sees the main task in creating the conditions for elevating Yakut diamond industry competitiveness in the Russian and global markets. The Diamond Counsel participates in forming and conducting the government policy of the diamond cluster.
The Counsel has recently made a summary of the 2012 results. They are controversial. The diamond production volume in 2012 comprised 153.3 million dollars or 63% of the planned volume (242 million dollars) that is 36% less than in the same period of 2011.
The production leader is “Yakut Almaz Company” Ltd. (57.2 million dollars) with 106% annual plan fulfillment. “Saha Diamond” Plc. has improved the results by increasing the volume 4 times in respect to 2011. “DDK” Ltd. has also a plan fulfillment of 109% which is 27% more than in 2011.
There were 12 operating plants in 2011, 2 of them were suspended last year. The main reason is the loss of investors and liquidity for rough diamond purchases.
Speaking about innovations Mr. Timofeev said: “In this field we are left behind, and very far behind. Only a few plants apply more or less modern technologies and have a modern equipment. They are “Yakut Almaz Company” Ltd. (Russia), “Saha Diamond” Plc. (China-Japan) and “DDK” Ltd. (India). One can make a conclusion that the innovative methods are mostly used in the companies with a foreign capital”.
